SLAM Hardwood Classics Cover Hoodie - Latrell Sprewell (Knicks Icons)

The SLAM ICONS project began in 2026 as a new series of digital covers celebrating storied players, teams and moments across basketball history.Ā

Fandom is a funny thing. Personal beliefs and past tragedies get projected onto young athletes, most often vilified in the eyes of ā€œfansā€ who don’t know their true story and don’t care to find out. One strike and you’re out, at least to most of these ā€œfans.ā€

And yeah, it’s true that Latrell Sprewell had more than one strike. But it’s also true those strikes were in response to pain from his past that nobody ever noticed or asked about.Ā

But Spree, the high-flying, scarily-competitive All-Star, got a second chance in New York. He was embraced, celebrated, even. The blue and orange’s faithful ecstatically cheered him on during the team’s run to the ā€˜99 Finals with undying loyalty. They gravitated towards him even as he continued to gravitate towards the rim on his power-packed 10-foot punches. There they were below him, a whole fanbase, reaching out for a chance to dance with his special kind of havoc.Ā

Not that he noticed. His past errors taught him to block out the noise, good or bad. Most of the time, he was listening to Wu-Tang Clan in his Discman, getting ready to bring da ruckus. And he always did.
